About RISE

Raising the Impact of the Socio-Economic sciences (RISE) is an European network of 8 higher education institutions in the field of social sciences and economics RISE founded in 2006.

The institutions participating in RISE share the wish to increase the impact of the social sciences and economics on social problems, in particular in Europe. They intend to achieve this by increasing the relevance of the contributions of the social sciences and economics to the solution of Europe's social problems, raise awareness of such contributions in relevant political and academic circles as well as with the general public and to enhance conditions to increase and strengthen such contributions in the future.

The member institutions of RISE seek to ensure that socio-economic research has a greater role to play in solving European social problems. To accomplish this, the RISE institutions will focus on increasing the relevance of their research with regard to social problems, as well as on creating a more receptive environment for type of this research within Europe. Together, the RISE member institutions will attempt to exert influence on research agendas both within their own countries and at the EU level. They also work together to increase awareness of socio-economic research among policy makers, the business sector and the general public.

Purpose
The purpose of RISE is to increase the impact of the social sciences and economics on social problems, in particular in Europe. The members of RISE view this purpose from two angles: we need to increase the relevance of the contributions of the social sciences and economics to the solution of Europe's social problems and we need to raise awareness of such contributions in relevant political and academic circles as well as with the general public. In addition, we need to enhance conditions to increase and strengthen such contributions, in particular by influencing the EU research agenda setting process.

More specifically, the means by which RISE intends to achieve its objects include the following:

  1. to focus the research agenda of higher education institutions in the field of the social sciences and economics to how the social sciences and ecomics can better contribute t the solution of Europe's social problems
  2. to raise the profile of the social sciences and economics with the European political and policy community, the European corporate sector and the European public
  3. to increase the possibilities of research funding for the social sciences and economics from national and European sources, by participating in national and supranational research agenda setting processes and by improving conditions and removing obstacles for carrying out socio-economic research
  4. to support the members in their actions on their national level when it comes to the objectives mentioned above

    Activities
    The activities of RISE include:
    1. to focus the research agenda of the academic community in the social sciences and economics on how the social sciences and economics can contribute better to the solution of Europe's problems,
    2. to influence the perception by relevant European communities of the contributions to European development made in the past by the socio-economic research,
    3. to identify issues of high social importance for Europe's future which can be addressed by research, in dialogue with relevant stakeholders. Stakeholders include politicians, national governments, top-researchers as well leaders of business and services sectors,
    4. to identify channels through which the EU and national research agendas can be better focussed on issues of high social importance for Europe's future. Such channels will include politicians, policy makers, national governments, Brussels' administrators, national and European research councils as well representatives of business and services sectors,
    5. to organise activities directed at stakeholders to exchange ideas and turn them into plans of action (workshops, conferences etc.),
    6. to engage with the general public through public events such as lectures and debates as well as other vehicles for involving the general public,
    7. to provide user standpoints on the administrative and financial operation of European research programmes by collecting information from network members on their experience and providing feedback to relevant actors at the EU level, highlighting best and worst practices and reporting on this to relevant Brussels authorities.
