This research focuses on key issues within media and communication including:
1. Media and Telecommunication Policy Broadcast licensing; spectrum policy; Internet governance; content regulation; freedom of expression; privacy; self-regulation; multi-stakeholder policy processes. (see also under Theme 2)
2. Social Media Participatory media; community broadcasting; alternative press; grassroots communication networks; social uses of interactive online media and mobile telecommunication; media and social-political activism.
3. Media in Central/Eastern Europe. Regional media landscape; regional challenges such as media concentration and Westernization; regional policy development; emergence of regional concepts on media studies In its research perspective, CEU draws from its regional history an interest in processes of transition and democratization, as well as a strong belief in freedom of expression, civil society and citizens┐ participation in political and communicative processes.

Relevance to future of European societies
As the role and penetration of new information and communication technologies and New Media increase policies and strategies in this area will become increasingly relevant to the EU as a whole and its member states individually.
