Addressing inequalities, problems of marginal and vulnerable groups both as social problems and as problems of governance, policymaking and politics is a main crosscutting topic of the CEU. Such research includes work on identities, including intersecting identities, work on social disadvantage, on the relationship between poverty and membership in vulnerable groups, research on social movements addressing these issues, on analysis of policy and legal responses to social diversity and problems of vulnerable groups.

Relevance to future of European societies
Equality and equal opportunities is a commonly accepted horizontal principle of European societies. The challenges of issues such as minority politics, gender inequalities, migration and ethnic diversity, equal rights of disabled persons are here to stay on the agenda of European social research and policy making as well.
